Take time to deliberate, but when the time for action has arrived, stop thinking and go in.

New Years Resolution Statistics

FACT: ADULTS OVER 50 HAVE LESS THAN 20% CHANCE TO FULFILL THEIR NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS

Why Most Older Folks Don't Reach Their Goals

After reviewing the cold hard facts from the Statistic Brain Research Institute, I could see that most of us are treading water upstream when we face making changes. The percent of people over 50 who achieve their resolution each year is only 14%. So less then one in five will make it.

Interestingly enough, the percent of people in their 20s who achieve their resolution each year amounts to 39%. This can lead one to believe that older dogs can learn new tricks, but unseating long-term habitual patterns will take a more concentrated effort.

I believe that failing your New Years Resolution occurs due to lack of preparation, and not understanding, or the lack of awareness of the mechanisms of habit.

Preparation

If you are going to run a marathon, you can't simply sign up and start running the race. You have to prepare, and that means you have to take a businesslike approach and be serious about what you doing.  Are you prepared to succeed in your next goal?

Take a quiz and see how prepared you are for your next New Year's resolution... and see your results!

According to an article by Timo Kiander on How to Prepare for the First Time at Anything, here's his suggestions:

  1. Ditch the perfection
  2. Forget what others think
  3. The time you spend doesn't matter
  4. Plan and prepare
  5. Prepare for the second time

Gosh Darn Those Habits!

Next, we have to face the fact that most everything we do is out of habit. Now that is not a bad thing, and in fact HABIT is responsible for getting us around and doing everything we to do. Can you imagine if we had to think about every movement? Habit is what the nervous system thrives on. Once grooves to neural patterns are established, then the mind doesn't have to think of it.

A book that I highly recommend that can also be purchased as an audiobook, is the Power Of Habit by Charles Duhigg. I believe it is truly fascinating to examine how habits affect not only ourselves but our societies on the highest level. Charles sets up lots of examples that we all can relate to, and looks at the micro and macro of habits that deeply affect our life and livelihood.

I suggest the we first learn to appreciate the nature of our own habits, and how they affect our lives. Just that fact alone will help us as we move towards replacing old patterns that keep us from reaching.

Next, you must have patience. If you're over 50, be prepared for a tough fight. There is discomfort when habits are changed, and if these are older habits, that expect the discomfort level to be more challenging.

Don't for a second let this discourage you. Life is dynamic, and things are changing anyway. Take the example of what I am doing and get motivated to make changes that are important for you. Don't look at failure as an absolute, and remember that what goes on today does not equal yesterday. Failure is just the steps and lessons along the way to your success.
